Some books find their way to you at just the right time, as if by magic. Bella by Gina L. Mulligan was one of those books for me. It was recommended by my dear friend Crystal Carminati, who I walked the Camino de Santiago with—a journey that, much like this novel, was mystical, transformative, and deeply spiritual.
The moment she told me about Bella, I ran out and grabbed a copy. And let me tell you, this book did not disappoint.
Set in the tiny, star-shaped city of Sabbioneta, Italy, Bella is a mesmerizing story of love, witchcraft, and the power of destiny. It’s a tale of a girl caught in a witch’s spell, dreaming of escape, bound by an enchantment that can only be undone when the prophecy plays out. It’s about curses, transformation, and breaking free, a narrative that weaves across generations of women navigating forces greater than themselves.
What struck me most was how Bella explores the strength and resilience of women. These are women who, despite facing oppression, war, and even the flames of the Inquisition, dare to dream, to love, to transcend. It’s a book about power—the power of words, of fate, and of the undeniable magic that lives within us all.
If you love historical fiction with a touch of magic, stories that make you think about who we are, where we come from, and what we are capable of overcoming, then Bella is for you.
